This post is going to be a bit different from my usual posts, I hope you don't mind, but I really feel the need to share my thoughts with you. Lately I've noticed that there is a little debate on the web about make up, beauty and everything that gravitates toward these two words. I think it all started when Kim Kardashian's contouring technique become very popular, especially in the beauty blogosphere.
Questo post sarà un po' diverso dai miei soliti post, spero non vi dispiaccia, ma sentivo davvero il bisogno di condividere con voi alcune riflessioni che mi sono ritrovata a fare recentemente. Infatti, da qualche tempo a questa parte, mi è capitato con sempre maggior frequenza di imbattermi, soprattutto navigando sul web, in alcune discussioni riguardanti il make up, il concetto di bellezza e tutto ciò che vi è connesso. Credo tutto abbia avuto inizio con la diffusione sempre maggiore, nella blogsfera ma non solo, della tecnica di contouring tanto amata ed utilizzata da Kim Kardashian.

For some reason, I've been reading a lot of critics about the use of this make up technique (which, must be said, has not been invented by K.K., but has been used for ages by every make up artists). The main issue seems to be the fact that all that make up (not only contouring, but full face make up in general) is too much and it's going to make women (or men) look fake and not necessarily more beautiful than they are without it, al least according to some people opinions.
Per qualche motivo, mi sono trovata a leggere molte critiche rivolte all'utilizzo di questo tipo di tecnica (che, va detto, non è stata inventata da K.K., ma viene utilizzata da sempre da qualunque make up artist). La questione rilevante sembra essere l'idea, sostenuta da alcuni, secondo la quale le donne (ma non solo) che si truccano in questo modo ricorrano ad una quantità esagerata di make up, apparendo finte e non necessariamente più belle di quanto non siano senza trucco.

What makes me decide to write this post is the fact that the majority of these opinions are expressed, often in a very rude way, by women, addressing other women, the way they look like and the concept of beauty they have. I find it very sad, because I've always thought that we should be supportive among each other, and, instead, I noticed how often women are women's worst enemies.
I've been thinking a lot about the concept of beauty and how it is linked to the use of make up and I've find myself wanting to share my considerations.
Ciò che mi ha fatto decidere di scrivere questo post è stata la constatazione che la maggior parte di queste critiche viene espressa, spesso in modo molto scortese, da donne nei confronti di altre donne, del loro aspetto fisico e della loro idea di bellezza. Trovo la cosa molto triste e sconfortante, ho sempre pensato che dovessimo sostenerci a vicenda e, invece, mi trovo a constatare come, spesso, il peggior nemico delle donne siano le donne stesse.
Ho pensato molto al concetto di bellezza e a come questo sia o meno legato all'uso del make up e mi sono ritrovata a fare alcune riflessioni.

First of all: do whatever makes you feel comfortable. Do you like yourself better with a full face make up? Great, go for it! Do you feel beautiful when you're not wearing make up at all? Awesome, go bare face! Don't care about what people say, because haters gonna hate anyway, and, to be honest, I think that the ones who criticized contouring are probably the ones that doesn't know how to do it!
Prima di tutto: fate qualunque cosa vi faccia sentire a proprio agio. Vi piacete di più quando avete il viso interamente truccato? Benissimo, allora truccatevi! Vi sentite bellissime senza trucco? Fantastico, allora mostrate il vostro viso al naturale! Non preoccupatevi di quello che dice la gente, le persone troveranno un modo per criticarvi comunque, quindi non prestate loro attenzione. Inoltre, se devo essere onesta, ho il sospetto che le persone che criticano il contouring in modo drastico siano quelle che non sono in grado di farlo!

Second: why criticize how a person looks like? I think it's symptom of ignorance and restrictiveness. Hopefully, we are not defined by the amount of make up we wear and our beauty is not linked to how we look like. I know it might sound rhetorical, but it's true: what makes us beautiful is not our external appearance, but how we are inside.
In secondo luogo: perché criticare una persona per il suo aspetto fisico? Lo trovo un evidente segno di ignoranza e limitatezza. Si spera, infatti, che ciò che ci definisca non sia la quantità di trucco che indossiamo e che la nostra bellezza sia legata a qualcosa di più profondo dell'aspetto estetico. So che può sembrare retorico, ma è la verità: ciò che ci rende belli non è dato da come appariamo esternamente, ma da come siamo dentro.

Third: make up is fun, take it easy! I've always thought about make up as a way to play with colors and shapes and as a funny way to change a bit the way I look, even if for a night only! I remember when I was a child playing with my grandmother red lipstick, I think I've always maintained that playful approach to make up. At the end of the day you wash it off, it's not going to change you appearance forever! Relax!
Terzo: il make up è divertente, prendetelo con leggerezza! Ho sempre pensato al trucco come ad un modo divertente per sperimentare con forme e colori e per apparire un po' diversa, anche se solamente per una serata. Ricordo che da bambina giocavo spesso con il rossetto rosso di mia nonna, credo di aver sempre mantenuto quel tipo di approccio giocoso nei confronti del make up. In fin dei conti, a fine giornata ti lavi la faccia e tutto torna come prima! Rilassiamoci!

Fourth: for some people make up is a life changer. Think about people with severe skin imperfections like scars, marks, etc. In some cases, make up is the only think that makes them feel comfortable in public. So, before criticizing, think twice!
Quattro: per alcune persone, il make up è in grado di apportare un significativo miglioramento alla loro vita sociale. Pensiamo a coloro che sono affetti da severe imperfezioni della pelle, come cicatrici, macchie, ecc. In alcuni casi, il trucco è l'unica cosa che fa sì che si sentano a proprio agio in pubblico. Quindi, prima di criticare, pensateci due volte!

So, my final thought is: what do you care? what do you care if people wear tons of make up or if they don't wear make up at all? Who are we to judge? Kim Kardashian obviously loves to define the shape of her face with heavy contouring and highlighting, but at the same time, there are a lot of pictures of her without make up, which means that she is confident enough to go out bare face. I don't see where the problem is. Try to be kind toward people you don't know and don't judge. Your life would be better!

Concludendo, il mio pensiero finale è questo: cosa importa? cosa importa se alcune persone amano indossare tonnellate di make up e altre non ne indossano affatto? Chi siamo noi per giudicare? Kim Kardashian, ovviamente, ama definire il contorno del suo viso con molto bronzer ed illuminante, ma, allo stesso tempo, mi pare che vi siano moltissime foto che la ritraggono senza make up, il che significa che si sente assolutamente a proprio agio ad uscire di casa anche senza trucco. Non vedo dove stia il problema. Cercate di essere gentili e di non giudicare. La vostra vita sarà migliore!
